Are Digital Marketing Certifications Worth it?

Digital marketing certifications can be worth it, but it depends on several factors. Here are some things to consider:

  1. Industry recognition: Some digital marketing certifications are highly recognized and respected. These certifications can help you stand out in the job market and demonstrate your expertise to potential employers.

  2. Cost: Some certifications can be expensive, so weighing the cost against the potential benefits is essential. Consider the value the certification can bring your career and whether it's worth the investment.

  3. Current knowledge: If you're already experienced in digital marketing, a certification may not add much value to your skill set. However, a certification can be a great way to gain new skills and knowledge if you're starting or looking to expand your knowledge in a particular area.

  4. Commitment: Some certifications require significant time and effort to complete, so it's important to be committed to the process and willing to put in the work.

My Take

I have been working in the digital space since 2009, and while I think it's important to brush up on your skills as much as you can, digital marketing certifications are not as necessary to my clients as they would be for a junior person. That being said, it is essential to keep current with the ever-changing world of digital marketing, which I do so through podcasts, webinars, and reading whitepapers from trusted sources.

It all boils down to time, money, and expertise. If you have time, but no money or expertise, look into free certifications provided by HubSpot and Lynda (which you can get through your local library - as long as you have a card). If you have time and money but no expertise, you probably need paid certifications, which will lend more value to your job search. If you have the expertise, a certification will enhance what you bring to the table, but the client is most interested in how you will solve their problems today.
