Do You Need a Mobile Friendly Website?

By De-de Mulligan

As I speak to customers and prospects, I receive this question regularly. The short answer is yes!

Yet, many that I speak with put it off – for a variety of reasons. This post will outline what happens to your organization when your site isn’t mobile, the difference between being web responsive and mobile responsive, and some tools to check out the situation for yourself.

What is a Mobile-Friendly Website?

It’s when users don’t have to zoom in to read text on their mobile devices. The images and text adjust to the device and rotation on the screen automatically.

What is Mobile-First Indexing?

When your site launched initially, Google crawled it for search terms. Every time you make changes to the website, it wakes up and indexes your site once again.

However, now it crawls the mobile site first, and it looks for compatibility issues between the desktop and mobile sites. If there are issues, your ranking suffers.

Therefore, it’s imperative to hire a web designer who understands the importance of developing and designing your website for the smartphone first. One hint: As you are developing the sandbox version of the site, be sure to check it out on your phone. If you don’t like how it loads and renders, now is the time to make those changes, not after the site launches.

If You Don’t Change Your Website, Will Your Rankings be Hurt?

What Tools Are Available to Test Your Website?

There are two tools from Google I recommend:

  1. The Mobile-Friendly Test and
  2. Test Your Site

What is the Difference Between Responsive Design and Mobile-First?

Responsive designs are geared toward the desktop first, mobile second. Mobile-First is the opposite.

Does the Website Have to be Fast?

Yes, Google states that most individuals will abandon your mobile website if it takes greater than two seconds to load.
