It's Time to Work on Your Bucket List

By the middle of April, I will have received my two COVID-19 vaccines and been through the quarantine period.

Now is the perfect time for me to tackle my bucket list and start on the things I want to accomplish for the rest of the year.

Here are some ways to think about it.

Life Lists

Bucket lists are a very positive concept, a "life list" first created by famous adventurer John Goddard. When he was fifteen years old, he heard his father's friend reflect that there were things in life he regretted never doing.

Writing your list down is essential to achieving them.

Please do it for the Right Reasons

Most bucket lists are created when someone learns they have a terminal illness and only have a set time left to live.

There are no right and wrong bucket lists. However, shoot for a meaningful bucket list, one that will provide an opportunity to connect with others or discover something about yourself.

Select Things You Like

Be honest about what makes you happy. You may have to step outside your comfort zone to have a new, meaningful experience. Once in a while, it's healthy to have sweaty palms and butterflies in your stomach. You may even have to do the things you want to accomplish as a solo adventurer, and that's okay.

Embrace Anticipation

I always love planning a vacation. The possibilities seem endless and exciting. Even I have the logistics complete; I relish the days leading up to my departure date. Please don't lose sight of that anticipation; savor it.

Be Present

Don't spend too much time rushing ahead. Make sure to take it all in! Some bucket list items can be extremely costly, so make sure not to waste any of it by letting it slip by and become a blur. Stop, take a moment and let it sink into your senses. After all, the present is anyone one of us has any control over!

Take Time to Reflect

Once you have completed a bucket list item, put some effort into looking at where you've been and reflect on what it has meant to you. Ensure you learn something from the experience

My Bucket List

I have several things on my list, but this year I plan to explore two areas – Monticello, the University of Virginia, and James Madison's estate. I have never been there, but as a recent Daughter of American Revolution member (that was on my bucket list, too). With what occurred in our recent election, I'm fascinated with Jefferson and Madison's lives, especially Madison, the Electoral College founder.

My second trip will be in July. The first two nights will be with friends visiting Hyde Park, NY, the home of FDR and the Vanderbilts, followed by solo camping at Lake George and Watkins Glen.

I think most of you will agree that life is too short to wait until the right time, we are retired, or until someone comes along. We have to do it!
