Why Trampoline Jumping is Great Exercise

We all loved jumping as a kid and now as “grown-ups” are we too late to start? Not at all! Today’s blog is going to tout the benefits for everyone in the family from ages 7 to 70. Read on to learn more.

Bone Density Benefits

 

Researchers at the University of Bristol gathered male and female adolescents and had them go about their daily routines while they wore activity monitors. The bone density of the volunteers’ hips was also measured during this time.

A week later, the scientists took the monitors and checked each teenager’s exposure to G forces, which is a measure of impact. Those who experienced impacts of 4.2 G’s or greater — though these were infrequent — had notably sturdier hipbones. Researchers showed that running a 10-minute mile or jumping up and down at least 15 inches high was needed to produce forces that great.

The significance of these findings: Individuals should run fast or jump high to generate forces great enough to help build bone density.

Pediatricians Recommend Safe Jumping
 

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends you don't have a trampoline at home because a trampoline can be dangerous if careless jumping occurs.

However, with careful safety precautions, jumping on a trampoline can be a good form of exercise.

Exercise Intensity


Jumping on a trampoline is considered moderate exercise intensity, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. During a moderate intensity workout, you're breaking a sweat but still able to carry on a conversation.

 

Jump Time
 

For true health benefits, you have to work out on a trampoline for at least 10 minutes at a time. At our Sky Zone, your time slot will either be for 30 or 60 minutes. With SkyRobics, you will take an hour class.

SkyRobics is a group workout, featuring a lot of the same moves as normal gym classes—lunges, mountain climbers, jumping jacks—but on a trampoline. Some exercises will require you to do laps around the entire trampoline, while others are done in your own personal area. The intensity of moves can be scaled up or down depending on your fitness level.  

Does Jumping on a Trampoline Work? 

 

“Working out on a trampoline can improve your coordination and agility and, since it puts your musculoskeletal system under slight stress, promotes stronger bones and can ward off osteoporosis,” says Natalie Rado, a personal trainer in New York City.


“One of the major benefits is that it’s a low-impact workout—the trampoline absorbs 80% of the shock when you do plyometrics or jog in place. When you’re on an unstable surface like a trampoline, you have to engage muscles throughout your whole body in order to stay balanced, which makes even regular exercises more challenging, says Rado.
