Tips to Make the Planet Greener

June 21, 2017

On April 22, 1970, 20 million Americans came together to demonstrate for more environmental action from the government, which we now refer to as Earth Day. Out of their movement, such legislation as the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts were passed by Congress. Today, more than 1 billion people celebrate Earth Day.

Below are some small things you can do to be greener at the office:

  1. Purchase Compact Florescent Lights (CFL) which use 66% less energy and last 13 times longer than incandescent bulbs.
  2. Turn off, and if possible unplug, all computers and other electrical equipment when you leave your office at night. Make sure all light switches are turned off.
  3. Consider other transportation options to work. Telecommute from a home office. Bike, walk, or take the bus to work. Carpool with a fellow associate.
  4. Buy paper and other supplies that are made from 100% recycled material. Buy in bulk so the delivery person only needs to make a few trips per year.
  5. Donate used computers, office furniture, and other supplies to local charities and schools.
  6. Put recycle bins by everyone’s desk and in the break room so everyone can easily recycle paper, glass, and plastic items.
  7. In the break room, invest in fair trade coffee and eliminate disposable dishes and silverware.
  8. Recycle Paper. Recycling 1 ton of paper saves 20 trees, 60 pounds of air pollutants, and 7,000 gallons of water!

What are you doing to celebrate Earth Day, every day?
